Every Sunday, Sutton Christadelphians hold a Breaking of Bread service to remember the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. While all are welcome to attend this service, only members eat bread and drink wine. We do this because Jesus asks his followers to remember him by eating bread and drinking wine as described in the book of Acts Chapter 23:
…the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
Christadelphians across the world hold this service regularly to remember Jesus, his sacrifice for our sins and the hope we have in his resurrection.
Whilst these are solemn and serious moments, the service is also joyful and uplifting as we celebrate Jesus’ victory over sin and death and his resurrection to everlasting life.
The service includes hymns of praise and thanksgiving from the Christadelphian Hymn Book, together with Bible readings and prayers. Each Sunday a different member of our community gives a short talk which directs our thoughts towards the hope we have (by God’s grace) of resurrection to new life in the Kingdom of God.
